My Research

My PhD research focuses on applying concepts from theoretical physics and the study of complex systems to the problem of forecasting future population dynamics across Ireland. This work forms the basis of the project PRAXIS: Population Renormalisation Analysis X Infrastructure Strategy, which is being conducted in partnership with The Problem Solving Association CLG.

The PRAXIS Project

The PRAXIS project is an interdisciplinary collaboration applying theoretical physics and complex systems principles to demographic forecasting in Ireland, with a particular focus on informing the development of Ireland’s high-voltage infrastructure. The project aims to address a fundamental challenge faced by decision-makers involved in Ireland’s renewable energy transition: how to optimally locate energy infrastructure to serve a dynamically changing population. By treating population dynamics as a complex physical system exhibiting power laws, phase transitions, and emergent behaviour, PRAXIS aims to develop novel, spatially-resolved forecasting methods that bridge the gap between mathematical theory and practical policy implementation.
